Play with the devil

“Sometimes to dance with the angels you have to play with the devil a little bit.”

According to Sarra Kessinger in the Salina Journal (2/29/2008), about coal-fired power plant legislation:

Yet a majority staunchly supports the measure’s intent to upend a state regulator’s denial of a permit for the power plants because of their expected carbon dioxide output.

“I think you’ve got to have consistency in regulation,” said Rep. Deena Horst, R-Salina. “We have no (CO2) standard, so how can you choose one and say, ‘I’m imposing this standard’?”

‘Dance with the angels’

Horst said she liked the bill’s renewable energy requirements, too, figuring that’s a way to garner votes.

“It’s kind of like that saying, ‘Sometimes to dance with the angels you have to play with the devil a little bit.’”

Which is the meaning of “play with the devil?” Is it to include renewable energy requirements to garner votes? Or is it playing with the devil to allow the plant, and renewable energy requirements are supposed dancing with angles?

We have a clear direction if we listen to the consensus of scientists worldwide, and Republican governors of many states such as Florida which will be hard hit by rising sea levels. We must reduce greenhouse gas emissions, that is reduce CO2 emissions.

Reduction in emissions should occur until we reach an 80% reduction in emissions from present levels in about 2050. That means we only emit one fifth (1/5) as much as now. Four out of every five sources of CO2 emissions must be abated in some manner, whether by reducing generation or by recapturing the emitted CO2 one way or another.

If the target is to vary somewhat, say 60% reduction, or 50% reduction–that makes little difference in regard to the new coal-fired plants. Unless that plant is to replace another plant by actually taking offline an operating plant that is less efficient, the new coal-fired plants will increase carbon emissions.

There is no lack of clarity in what is needed, whether or not the federal government nor our local legislators have made up their minds. Generally work toward reducing emissions at every opportunity. And above all cause no harm–such as increasing our carbon emissions even beyond current levels.
