A common stage when confronted with the knowledge one has a serious disease or problem is denial.
We are in denial about the problem of global climate change. We largely don’t want to think about it. Thinking about change is often painful. Change requires things of ourselves in which we don’t see immediate rewards.
Listen to talk radio. Read comments posted to news articles. Considering the importance of global climate change and activities we need to do to combat it are described as “liberal”–as though the truth will be different for those of one party from another, as though the children of one group will live in a different world from another group. Legislative leaders call the science “unproven”–but of course all science including that needed to put a man on the Moon is “unproven”, a term reserved in science for mathematical certainty.
If your doctor tells you that you need treatment for cancer or you are very likely to suffer very bad consequences, do you respond “that’s unproven” let’s wait to see what happens? No, I think most of us have respect for the knowledge that comes from that scientifically based endeavor. We may want a second opinion. But scientists world wide are telling us that we have passed the point of serious question when it comes to the issue of whether human activity is causing significant and dangerous global climate change.
But the scale of the problem is different here. There are a great many people who’s activities must change and their means of income may even change. Don’t blame them for having a difficult time with accepting the word of all these scientists worldwide. But don’t doom ourselves to failure and our children to a world we would not want to live in by staying stuck in a state of denial.
Global climate change is being caused by human activity, beyond a reasonable doubt, and we must act.
