Seduction
We are being seduced in many ways. A constant stream of advertising tells us to use more energy, buy a larger vehicle. Be a man, you need the largest truck in your county! The largest house! (Often the furthest away from work and community centers in our populated end of the state.)
Has all this made any difference in how you relate to your friends, family and those you love, church? How well do you think these patterns will work when gasoline is $8, $20 per gallon, propane and natural gas cost hundreds in heating? Your author suggests that there is a better way–a better way that builds community, saves energy, produces jobs and local income.
The new “attractive” man or woman might drive a wind-charged electric vehicle some day in the near future, or some other energy efficient way to travel including walking or bicycling. He or she may live in a solar heated home taking little or no utilities, and might work to build communities that are safe, connected, and energy efficient at the same time. Working toward better communities can be a lot more “seductive” in a good way, rather than responding to all the beckoning which leads us astray.
No single person can provide “the” answers–certainly not this web site. Each community has to find its own way. Start the discussion.
